The incident occurred as Pinera was reportedly piloting a helicopter with three passengers onboard over Lago Ranco, a lake in southern Chile where he owned a residence.

Chile’s Interior Minister, Carolina Toha, conveyed condolences to Piñera’s family and all those close to him, as well as to the Chilean people, during a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon. Tohá highlighted Piñera’s contributions as a two-time democratically elected president of Chile.
Piñera’s body has been recovered, while the three passengers managed to swim ashore, according to reports.
Piñera will be given a state funeral, and national mourning has been declared following his tragic demise.
A wake is scheduled to take place on Thursday at the former congress building in Santiago, the capital of Chile.
