Chile to intervene in South Africa’s ICJ case against Israel

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has announced that Chile will intervene in South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Speaking before Congress, Boric stated that they will intervene in the case against Israel filed under the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948.

Boric condemned the Israeli military for indiscriminately targeting innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip, saying, “Today, I feel it is my duty to express our outrage over what is happening in Gaza. We will never cease to voice our anger at the loss of innocent lives, particularly women and children, due to the Israeli military’s attacks. Over 35,000 people have been killed.”

Highlighting the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, Boric emphasized, “The infrastructure of Gaza has been completely destroyed. It is time for the international community to respond firmly. We will intervene in the ICJ case against Israel for violating the Genocide Convention.”

Boric mentioned that he has given the necessary instructions for Chile’s arguments to be presented at the ICJ, stating, “We will never accept barbarity, no matter where or in what form it occurs. We have also unequivocally condemned Hamas’s terrorist attacks and demanded the unconditional release of all hostages.”

Boric’s remarks were met with prolonged applause from Congress.
