Canada PM Trudeau to meet US President-elect Trump to reverse stiff tariff plan
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Florida on Nov. 29 to meet with President-elect Donald Trump in an effort to discourage the proposed 25% rise in customs tariffs.
According to CBC News, Trudeau’s plane landed at Palm Beach International Airport, where he is expected to dine with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Reports indicate that Canada’s Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc is accompanying the prime minister on the visit, which comes after Trump announced on Monday that tariffs would remain in place until Canada and Mexico address the “invasion” of illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl, and undocumented migrants into the United States.
Highlighting the gravity of Trump’s tariff threats, Trudeau said at a news conference earlier on Friday: “Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about that.”
“Our responsibility is to point out that, in this way, he would not only be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, but also raising prices for American citizens and hurting American industry and businesses,” Trudeau added.
The United States imported approximately $435 billion worth of Canadian goods between January and September 2023, underscoring the potential economic impact of the proposed tariffs.
