California braces for consecutive Pacific storms, expecting heavy rains and potential flooding

Southern California experienced the initial impact of a one-two punch from a Pacific storm, as the region faced heavy rainfall, flooding and road closures on Thursday.

One of the areas severely affected was Long Beach, located just south of Los Angeles.

A stretch of freeway and nearby streets beneath a railroad bridge succumbed to rainwater, resulting in flooding that left numerous vehicles submerged up to their roofs.

Authorities and emergency response teams were on high alert, preparing for the larger storm expected to hit the region in the coming days.

The situation underscores the region’s vulnerability to the impacts of atmospheric river storms, emphasizing the importance of preparedness, infrastructure resilience and coordinated efforts to ensure public safety in the face of extreme weather events.
