Bulgarian Police intercept migrant trafficking pickup truck using spike strips
Bulgarian police discover six migrants from Syria in a swift operation near Trajan’s Gate tunnels
Bulgarian police successfully intercepted a pickup truck carrying six illegal migrants from Syria in a swift operation near Trajan’s Gate tunnels on the Trakia highway.
The incident took place around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday as a result of the authorities acting on intelligence about ongoing migrant trafficking activities.
The police officers’ attempt to stop the vehicle led to a brief pursuit, as the driver was determined to evade capture and ignored their signals.
However, the law enforcement officers quickly adapted by deploying spike strips on the road.
This strategic move punctured the tires of the fleeing pickup truck, bringing it to a halt and enabling the officers to apprehend the individuals involved.
Upon inspection, the authorities discovered the 6 migrants hidden inside the vehicle. Further complicating the situation, the 51-year-old driver of the pickup truck tested positive for narcotic substances, according to the police report.
Bulgarian law enforcement agencies are facing continuous challenges in their efforts to combat the intertwined issues of illegal migration and drug trafficking.
These challenges are particularly pronounced along Bulgaria’s key transit routes, which have become focal points for illicit activities.
