Bulgaria approves $1.74 million in compensation to former King Simeon Sakskoburgotski and his sister Mariya-Luiza Hrobok

Bulgaria’s prime minister’s office has announced a compensation payout of $1.74 million to former King Simeon Sakskoburgotski and his sister Mariya-Luiza Hrobok, following a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. However, the statement clarified that this compensation is contingent upon the outcome of the ongoing inheritance case in the local court. If the court rules against the duo, the funds will be compulsorily returned to the state.

The government has issued a reminder that the former king of Bulgaria, who, 14 years ago, reclaimed numerous properties from the state through a court, arguing that they belonged to the tsarist family, had won his case before the European Court of Human Rights three months ago.

Sakskoburgotski, the former prime minister of the country from 2001 to 2005, leading the National Freedom and Ascension Movement (NDSV) party that he founded, initiated multiple lawsuits seeking the return of family properties valued at 600 million euros.

After his term as prime minister, Sakskoburgotski faced successive losses in compensation lawsuits amid accusations that his prioritization of inheritance conflicted with his political principles. He is currently involved in ongoing legal proceedings seeking the return of family properties expropriated after 1944.
