Brazil stops diplomatic relations with Israel after, Brazillian President is denounced as ‘persona-non-grata’
Brazil withdraws ambassador from Israel following President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva’s controversial remarks comparing Israel’s conflict with Hamas to the Holocaust.
In the wake of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva’s controversial remarks equating Israel’s conflict with Hamas to the Holocaust, Brazil took a decisive step on Monday. President Lula’s administration has expelled the Israeli ambassador from Brazil and recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv, marking a significant escalation in the diplomatic fallout.
The tension between Brazil and Israel arose after President Lula’s statements on Sunday, which drew condemnation from Israeli officials and Holocaust memorial organizations. Lula’s comparison of the conflict in the Gaza Strip to the genocide perpetrated by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust was met with strong criticism, with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz declaring him persona non grata in Israel until he apologizes.
In response to Israel’s stance and in solidarity with President Lula’s position, Brazil has opted to cut diplomatic relations with Israel altogether. This decision underscores the gravity of the situation and reflects Brazil’s stance on the matter.
