Biden announces $8B military aid package for Ukraine

U.S. President Joe Biden has unveiled a $7.9 billion military aid package for Ukraine, reaffirming his commitment to help Kyiv win the war.
In a written statement, Biden expressed pride in welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the White House, emphasizing U.S. support since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Of the total aid, $5.5 billion from previously approved funds will be sent to Ukraine before the 2024 fiscal year ends on Monday.
An additional $2.4 billion will be used to supply weapons, further strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities.
The package includes JSOW-guided bombs with a range of 130 kilometers (80.77 miles), enhancing Ukraine’s ability to strike Russian targets at longer distances. However, Biden did not comment on whether these weapons could be used on Russian territory, and U.S. officials indicated that Biden has not authorized such use.
The aid also includes Patriot missiles and air defense systems. Biden has instructed the Pentagon to accelerate pilot training for F-16 fighter jets, reinforcing Ukraine’s air defense strategy.
