Belarus President says he will run for re-elections in 2025
Alexander Lukashenko announces intention to run for re-election in 2025, vows to stand firm against the opposition
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced Sunday that he intends to run for president again in 2025, according to the Belarusian state news agency BelTA.
Speaking to journalists at a polling station after casting his vote in parliamentary and local council elections, Lukashenko said: “Tell them (the exiled opposition) that I’ll run. No one, no responsible president would abandon his people who followed him into battle.”
A close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Lukashenko, aged 69, has been in power in Belarus since 1994.
Regarding a follow-up question about the upcoming presidential election, Lukashenko remarked: “We’re still a year away from the presidential election. A lot of things can change.”
“Naturally, I and all of us, society, will react to the changes that will take place in our society and the situation in which we will approach the elections in a year,” he added.
