Azerbaijani President addresses key regional issues, Türkiye-Azerbaijan unity at international forum
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev says France, India and Greece are arming Armenia, saying, ‘If we perceive a serious threat to ourselves, we will have to take serious measures’
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed critical regional issues, Türkiye-Azerbaijan unity at international at the international forum titled “COP29 and Green Vision for Azerbaijan,” held at ADA University in Baku.
Addressing the negotiations for a peace agreement with Armenia, Aliyev stated: “We are closer to signing a peace agreement than ever before. During the occupation, we were never this close. Back then, we couldn’t even agree on basic principles. Now we have a common understanding of what the peace agreement should be like. We just need to work out the details. But of course, both sides need time.”
Regarding the corridor that will connect Azerbaijan’s western regions with Nakhchivan via Armenia, Aliyev said: “This issue is mentioned in the trilateral statement signed on Nov. 10, 2020 (between Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia).”
“Yes, the expression ‘Zangezur Corridor’ is not mentioned there. Still, it is stated that there will be a road connection between Azerbaijan’s western parts and Nakhchivan, and Russian forces will ensure the security of this road. For more than three years, Armenia has been violating this clause. They are obstructing establishing a connection with Nakhchivan,” the Azerbaijani president added.
Aliyev also commented on Armenia acquiring new weapons, saying: “France, India, and Greece are arming Armenia against us. They are doing this openly and even trying to prove something to us. We cannot just sit and wait. We have conveyed our stance to the Armenian government and the parties supporting Armenia today. If we perceive a serious threat to ourselves, we will have to take serious measures.”
‘Türkiye-Azerbaijan unity significant criterion for regional security and stability’
Touching upon Türkiye-Azerbaijan relations, Aliyev stated: “The unity between Türkiye and Azerbaijan is a significant criterion for regional security and stability. The rapprochement between Türkiye and Armenia and normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia should be conducted in parallel. Our stance and that of the President of Türkiye are in this direction.”
