Azerbaijan celebrates 79th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany
Azerbaijan commemorates the 79th anniversary of the Soviet army’s victory over Nazi Germany, honoring the sacrifices of its citizens, including General Hezi Aslanov, with Azerbaijan’s President Aliyev laying flowers at his grave in Baku
Events were held in Azerbaijan to mark the 79th anniversary of the Soviet army’s defeat of Nazi Germany.
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and his wife Mihriban Aliyeva visited the grave of “Hero of the Soviet Union” Azerbaijani General Hezi Aslanov in Baku and laid flowers.
The ceremony held at Aslanov’s grave was attended by officials of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, cadets, citizens and World War II veterans.
His grandson Major General Hezi Aslanov, who bears the same name as Aslanov, also participated in the ceremony.
May 9, the day the Soviet Union defeated Nazi Germany, is celebrated as Victory Day in many former Soviet countries.
More than 640,000 Azerbaijanis served in the Soviet army during the Second World War and more than 300,000 of them lost their lives in the war. During the war, 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of “Hero of the Soviet Union.”
During the war, Azerbaijan supplied 80% of the Soviet army’s fuel and 90% of its motor oil needs.
