Astana could act as a mediator between Azerbaijan and Armenia
Kazakhstan prepares to mediate for the signing of a permanent peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Despite 3.5 years passing since the Second Karabakh War, a lasting peace agreement has not been signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Negotiation processes led by Russia and the European Union have failed to yield results. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that Kazakhstan could be an ideal mediator.
In a statement on Saturday, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said, “We can mediate for the signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”
Kazakh officials emphasize that Kazakhstan is allied with Armenia in the Collective Security Treaty Organization and with Azerbaijan in the Organization of Turkic States, suggesting that the Astana administration could facilitate reconciliation between the parties.
Tokayev’s proposal comes at a time when ceasefire violations are increasing along the Azerbaijan-Armenia border. Astana, which has mediated in many crises, seeks to position itself as an international diplomatic center.
