Armenian Foreign Minister discusses peace talks with OSCE chairman-in-office
Armenian FM Ararat Mirzoyan and OSCE Chairman-in-Office Ian Borg discuss peace negotiations with Azerbaijan, emphasizing the importance of mutual recognition and border demarcation for lasting peace in the South Caucasus
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Chairman-in-Office and Maltese Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Trade Ian Borg, who visited the capital Yerevan.
According to the official news agency Armenpress, Mirzoyan mentioned the peace agreement negotiations with Azerbaijan, saying that his meeting with Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov in Almaty, Kazakhstan, had a positive atmosphere.
Mirzoyan emphasized the necessity of mutual recognition of territorial integrity and border demarcation efforts between the two countries based on the 1991 Almaty Declaration.
He expressed his belief that incorporating the principles of the Almaty Declaration into peace agreement negotiations with Azerbaijan would facilitate the resolution of the long-standing regional dispute and establish lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
Mirzoyan highlighted the reopening of transportation routes in the region as an important component of peace, stating, “We are particularly interested in restoring railway connections with Azerbaijan in the initial stage. Of course, all infrastructure will be under the sovereignty of the countries it passes through, operate under their jurisdiction, and will be regulated in accordance with principles of reciprocity and equality.”
Maltese Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Trade Ian Borg emphasized the necessity for the Armenian and Azerbaijani peoples to achieve the peace, security, and prosperity they truly deserve after decades of conflict and suffering. He affirmed their commitment to supporting all national and international initiatives that yield concrete results in this regard.
