Alternatives available to Israel’s ‘ground operation’ in Rafah, says Blinken
U.S. Secretary of State Blinken opposes ‘ground operation’ in Rafah, calls for alternatives, amid protests over Israeli Defense Minister Gallant’s visit
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in the capital, Washington.
During the meeting, Blinken emphasized they oppose the “ground operation” in Rafah and highlighted the presence of alternative approaches.
Secretary of State Blinken also discussed the immediate increase of humanitarian aid to meet the needs of civilians in Gaza.
On the other hand, the State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday that the U.N. Security Council resolution adopted earlier in the day, which called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, is “non-binding.”
“We chose not to veto it because we believe the language regarding the cease-fire and the release of hostages aligns with the longstanding position of the United States,” he added.
Addressing potential backlash from international parties alleging “genocide” in Gaza, Miller also mentioned on Monday that the United States has not found Israel to be in breach of international humanitarian law during its conduct of the conflict in Gaza or its provision of humanitarian aid.
