Algeria has set an ambitious goal of increasing its trade volume with Türkiye to $10 billion, as announced by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf following a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Monday.

The two ministers co-chaired the third Türkiye-Algeria Joint Planning Group (JPG) meeting in Algeria’s capital, Algiers.

Attaf highlighted the progress made in Türkiye-Algeria relations under the guidance of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The trade volume between the two nations reached a record $6 billion last year, a significant achievement that they aim to build on in the coming years.

“We aim to increase this figure to $10 billion,” Attaf stated, underscoring the importance of overcoming any obstacles on the path to this goal.

He emphasized that Algeria’s economy offers substantial investment opportunities in key sectors, including renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, and expanding bilateral partnerships.

Meanwhile, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received Foreign Minister Fidan on Monday during his official visit to the capital, Algiers.

Türkiye’s new Consulate General in Oran opened

In addition to the trade discussions, Fidan officially opened Türkiye’s new Consulate General in Oran on Sunday, further solidifying the growing bilateral ties.

The opening ceremony, part of Fidan’s official visit to Algeria, marks another step in strengthening the relationship between the two nations with shared historical roots.

“This new consulate will serve as a bridge, further connecting our peoples and facilitating increased cooperation,” Fidan remarked during the event.

Türkiye’s top trade partner in Africa

The growing economic partnership is reflected in the significant rise in bilateral trade, which reached a record $6.3 billion in 2023.

This marks a major increase from $3.5 billion in 2018. Algeria has become Türkiye’s top trade partner in Africa, with approximately 1,500 Turkish companies operating in the country, contributing over $6 billion in investments.

Turkish construction companies have also played a significant role, executing 636 projects worth $21.3 billion.

Ties dating back to 16th century

The historical ties between Algeria and Türkiye date back to the 16th century, when northern Algeria was part of the Ottoman Empire. Though the relationship experienced challenges during Algeria’s independence struggle, ties have improved significantly since the 1980s.

Today, the two countries also cooperate in security matters, combating issues like drug trafficking, human trafficking, and organized crime.

Energy cooperation plays a key role in the partnership, with Algeria serving as Türkiye’s fourth-largest natural gas supplier, providing about 8% of Türkiye’s natural gas imports.

Algeria ranks as Türkiye’s 23rd largest export market and 25th largest supplier of imports, while Türkiye is Algeria’s 6th largest economic partner. Both countries are committed to further expanding their cooperation in trade, energy, and security.
