AI must not be deployed for mass killings: Guterres
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Israel’s deployment of artificial intelligence in attacks on Gaza
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the Israeli military’s use of artificial intelligence in assaults on the Gaza Strip in a statement on Saturday.
“I am troubled by reports indicating that the Israeli military employed artificial intelligence in target selection during attacks, resulting in civilian casualties,” Guterres said.
The use of AI by Israel to conduct attacks and its consequent escalation of civilian casualties has been a topic of ongoing discussion.
According to intelligence assessments, Israel’s “Lavender” system, while identifying low-profile targets associated with Hamas, also leads to the unintended killing of other civilians in the vicinity.
Expressing his disapproval of this situation, Guterres emphasized, “Artificial intelligence should be harnessed for the betterment of humanity. It must not contribute to the prosecution of wars.”
