Despite Netanyahu’s recent declaration opposing Palestinian sovereignty post-conflict with Hamas, Biden expresses openness to various forms of the two-state solution.

In a recent conversation between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the leaders addressed the ongoing tensions arising from the Gaza war. Despite Netanyahu’s recent declaration opposing Palestinian sovereignty post-conflict with Hamas, President Biden remains optimistic about the potential for a two-state solution, according to his statement on Friday.

The call, which took place after nearly a month of silence between the two leaders, revealed contrasting views on the future political landscape in the region. Netanyahu, staunch in his opposition to Palestinian sovereignty, emphasized the necessity for Israel to maintain security control over the entire territory west of the Jordan River. This condition, according to him, conflicts with the idea of Palestinian sovereignty.

President Biden, however, expressed openness to various forms of the two-state solution. He acknowledged the existence of different types of such solutions, pointing out that several United Nations member countries operate without their own militaries.

“There’s a number of countries that are members of the UN that… don’t have their own militaries,” Biden stated during a press briefing at the White House. “And so, I think there’s ways in which this could work.”

When questioned about Netanyahu’s stance, Biden remained diplomatic, saying, “I’ll let you know.”

The Biden-Netanyahu relationship, spanning four decades and characterized by complexity, has faced scrutiny in recent times due to their differing opinions on the Gaza conflict. While Netanyahu is determined to demilitarize Gaza and destroy Hamas, Biden reiterated his commitment to the promise and possibility of a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians.

The White House clarified that the call was not a direct response to Netanyahu’s comments but confirmed that the president raised the issue during their conversation. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized Biden’s belief in the two-state solution.

The call also touched upon the issue of US hostages held captive by Hamas since the Oct 7 attacks on Israel. Biden has been a consistent supporter of Israel since the attacks, publicly embracing Netanyahu and pledging full US support.
