A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka region at a depth of 51 km (32 miles), according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) on Saturday.

Tsunami warning

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami threat in response to the quake. Further updates and safety advisories are expected as authorities monitor the situation.

However, the Kamchatka branch of Russia’s emergency ministry has reported that there is no tsunami threat following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake off the Kamchatka coast.

According to the ministry, aftershocks have been recorded with magnitudes ranging from 3.9 to 5.0, but most are imperceptible.
