The Ukrainian Air Force announced on Thursday that 17 Russian drones were shot down around Odesa

Ukrainian air defense units reported destroying 17 of the 20 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia overnight.

According to the air defense statement made on May 9, the drones were launched from the occupied Crimean peninsula. Missile units and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Air Force intercepted the drones over Odesa Oblast. Local authorities did not provide any information on the aftermath of the attack.

Drone strikes are a daily occurrence in Ukraine, affecting various regions of the country. Ukraine is experiencing a critical shortfall in its air defense systems because of delays caused by Congress in passing U.S. military aid, allowing Russian forces to launch renewed attacks on energy infrastructure.

Russia’s latest attack, which occurred overnight on May 8 against Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv and Vinnytsia oblasts, mainly targeted energy infrastructure.

According to DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, at least three thermal power plants have been damaged.

The company did not specify the location of the plants but said equipment was “severely” damaged.
