13 migrants confirmed dead, 27 missing after boat sinks off Tunisia’s coast

Tragedy struck off the coast of Tunisia as a Sudanese migrant ship capsized, leaving 13 dead and 27 still missing, according to a report by Tunisian judicial officials.

The vessel, carrying 42 passengers, all Sudanese nationals, departed from Sfax. Tunisian Judge Farid Ben Jha noted that only two individuals were rescued.

Tunisia has become the primary departure point in North Africa for individuals fleeing poverty and conflict across Africa and the Middle East, seeking refuge in Europe.

The country has witnessed a surge in migration since the previous year, resulting in frequent tragedies involving migrant boats sinking off its shores, particularly those carrying hopefuls from sub-Saharan Africa aiming to reach Italy.

In 2023, Tunisian coast guard authorities reported recovering nearly 1,000 bodies of migrants who drowned off their coast, marking the highest toll recorded in any single year. Among those attempting the perilous journey, Tunisians themselves have been included. Just last month, approximately 40 Tunisian migrants went missing after embarking on a voyage toward Italy.
