UN Security Council delegation starts its three-day visit to Colombia to monitor the ongoing peace process with insurgent groups

A delegation from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) visited Colombia to monitor the country’s ongoing “Complete Peace” process.

President Gustavo Petro addressed the press and expressed his satisfaction with the visit of the UNSC representatives. He emphasized that funds allocated for social transformation in the regions most affected by conflicts in Colombia have been misappropriated.

“Commitments were not fulfilled, meaning that necessary social transformation has not been achieved in the areas where conflicts are most intense. Sufficient investment has not been made under the peace agreement, resulting in a resurgence of violence in these regions,” Petro said.

Switzerland’s representative to the Security Council, Pascale Baeriswyl, stated in a press briefing that Colombia’s policy of complete peace sets an example for the world.

Government praised for peace efforts

In a joint press statement, the UNSC representatives praised the government for its peace negotiations with the armed insurgent groups National Liberation Army and the Central High Command, also known as the umbrella group for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

As part of the three-day visit by 15 representatives affiliated with the UNSC, it was reported that they would visit the Regional Education and Reintegration Area in the Caqueta administrative region, where former FARC members are being integrated.
