UN Security Council to vote on Gaze cease-fire
U.N. Security Council to vote on Algerian cease-fire resolution for Israel-Hamas conflict on Tuesday, with the U.S. indicating it would veto the resolution
The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on Tuesday regarding an Algerian proposal for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.
The U.S. has indicated it will veto the resolution, expressing concerns that it could disrupt ongoing negotiations aimed at securing a pause in the hostilities.
Algeria submitted the initial draft over two weeks ago, and despite their request for a vote on Saturday, the resolution faces opposition from the U.S. and requires at least nine affirmative votes and no vetoes from permanent members for adoption.
U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated that the U.S. does not support the resolution as drafted and would not allow its adoption.
While the U.S. typically protects Israel from U.N. action, it has previously abstained from votes concerning humanitarian aid for Gaza and calls for temporary cease-fires.
Presently, discussions among the U.S., Egypt, Israel, and Qatar are ongoing in an attempt to negotiate a halt to the conflict and the release of hostages held by Hamas.
