UN event highlights Türkiye’s zero-tolerance approach to violence against women
Türkiye’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ahmet Yildiz, emphasized the urgent need to address the rising levels of violence against women and girls worldwide, reaffirming his country’s “zero-tolerance approach” in combating such abuse.
Speaking at a high-level event on Monday at the UN General Assembly in New York, Yildiz marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, stressing that the issue continues to be a severe global challenge.
“Violence against women and girls remains an alarming global challenge,” Yildiz stated, underscoring its detrimental impact on social equality, human dignity, and sustainable development. He further noted that Türkiye remains resolute in its efforts to combat gender-based violence through legal reforms, strategic frameworks, and comprehensive support systems.
Yildiz highlighted several national and local initiatives aimed at curbing violence against women within Türkiye, noting the importance of a multifaceted approach. He pointed out that while progress has been made, the fight is ongoing, particularly in conflict zones.
“In conflict zones, women often bear the heaviest burdens, experiencing heightened vulnerabilities to violence, displacement, and economic deprivation,” Yildiz said, drawing attention to the disproportionate suffering faced by women and girls during times of armed conflict.
He referenced ongoing crises in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar, where women and girls are enduring severe human rights violations. “Women and girls’ rights are under threat in these regions,” he noted, calling on the international community to prioritize their protection and to ensure their participation in all spheres of life.
Yildiz also reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to eliminating violence against women and girls, stressing that empowering women and ensuring their rights is essential to global peace and prosperity.
