UN chief commends Erdogan’s role in facilitating Ethiopia-Somalia peace talks
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his satisfaction with the signing of the Ankara Declaration between Ethiopia and Somalia, thanking Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his role in bringing the two leaders together and facilitating the agreement.
In a written statement released by the UN Spokesperson’s Office, Guterres praised the commitment of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to resolve contentious issues through friendship and mutual respect.
“The Secretary-General eagerly anticipates the commencement of technical negotiations and the positive outcomes from this process,” the statement read.
The UN also underscored its readiness to support the ongoing efforts. “Secretary-General Guterres extends his gratitude to President Erdogan for his initiative in bringing the two leaders together and for his continued support in the implementation of the agreement,” the statement concluded.
