Ukraine claims it destroyed Russian military ship in Black Sea
This latest incident adds to a series of attacks by Ukraine on Russian warships in the region
Ukraine conducted a successful military operation in the Black Sea Wednesday, targeting and destroying a Russian military vessel.
The operation, conducted by Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (GUR), involved using “MAGURA” drones in a joint effort. The specific target was the Russian landing ship Caesar Kunikov. Ukrainian officials reported that the attack resulted in irreparable damage to the vessel, causing it to sink in the Black Sea.
This latest incident adds to a series of attacks by Ukraine on Russian warships in the region. Previous actions include the sinking of the guided missile ship Ivanovets earlier in the month and the notable sinking of the Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, in April 2022.
The “MAGURA” drones utilized in the operation are relatively small, measuring only a few meters in length and powered by jet skis. Despite their size, they possess an extensive range of approximately 800 kilometers (nearly 500 miles).
This capability allows military units to launch drones from various locations along Ukraine’s coastline to conduct missions targeting Crimean objectives.
Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO chief, praised Ukraine’s recent advancements in the Black Sea as a significant accomplishment.
