Türkiye’s UN rep. urges realistic approach to Syria crisis

“Terrorism poses the most significant threat to Syria’s political unity, territorial integrity,” Türkiye’s U.N. Representative Onal says

Türkiye’s U.N. permanent representative stated on Thursday that terrorism now poses the most significant threat to Syria’s political unity, territorial integrity, and the overall peace and stability of the region.

During a session of the U.N. Security Council addressing Syria’s political and humanitarian situation, Sedat Onal expressed concern about the current stalemate, describing it as unsustainable for both Syria and the broader region.

“It is therefore crucial for all relevant actors to engage in a realistic reassessment,” he emphasized.

Onal highlighted that a sustainable solution to the Syrian crisis requires achieving a national consensus aligned with the aspirations of the Syrian people. This, he noted, necessitates a willingness from all stakeholders to reevaluate their positions and make necessary paradigm shifts to contribute to long-lasting peace and stability.

The U.N. representative pointed out three critical areas where a change in approach is needed. Firstly, he called for a review of the Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process under U.N. facilitation.

Secondly, Onal criticized the practice of entrusting the fight against Daesh to another terrorist organization, specifically referring to the PKK/YPG.

“This separatist entity is neither Syrian nor democratic; it is nothing but the PKK/YPG itself,” he stated.

Onal also remarked on the ineffective outcomes of sequential approaches that link the return of refugees to progress in the political process.

“The settlement process must now incorporate creating the necessary conditions for the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of Syrian refugees,” he added.
