Türkiye’s Roketsan expands defense capabilities with advanced missile systems
Türkiye’s defense sector continues to expand its technological capabilities, driven by Roketsan, an Ankara-based defense firm specializing in domestically produced missiles and advanced weapons systems. The company has unveiled a wide range of air, naval, and ground systems designed to enhance national security and operational effectiveness.
Expanding missile capabilities
Roketsan’s Tayfun short-range ballistic missile highlights its technological advancements with a range exceeding 280 kilometers (174 miles). Built for all-weather operations, the missile stems from the earlier Bora tactical ballistic missile, which is similarly capable of striking strategic targets, including radar systems and communication infrastructure.
Guided missile systems such as the TRG-300 and TRG-230 emphasize speed and precision, targeting distances of up to 120 kilometers (74 miles) and 70 kilometers (43.5 miles), respectively. Meanwhile, the TRG-122 offers a cost-effective solution with its 28-kilometer (17.4 miles) range and high-accuracy features aimed at minimizing civilian casualties.
Ground-based innovations
The Kara Atmaca surface-to-surface cruise missile and Tanok laser-guided anti-tank missile underscore Roketsan’s commitment to battlefield adaptability. The Kara Atmaca boasts a jam-resistant design with a range of 280 kilometers, while the Tanok offers a compact, accurate solution for armored engagements with a range of over 6 kilometers (3.73 miles).
Anti-tank systems, including the OMTAS and L-OMTAS, demonstrate versatility against moving and fixed targets. These medium-range systems, equipped with advanced seeker technology, operate under diverse environmental conditions, ensuring reliable performance.
Air superiority and psychological impact
The SOM air-to-surface stand-off missile is a standout among Roketsan’s air systems, capable of engaging heavily protected targets beyond air defense range. Additionally, the UAV-230 supersonic missile introduces psychological warfare tactics, targeting from up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) away.
Smart munitions such as the MAM-T and MAM-C are tailored for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and light aircraft. With precise guidance technologies, they enable effective targeting even in harsh conditions.
Naval and air defense systems
Roketsan has fortified Türkiye’s naval capabilities with systems like the Barbaros coastal defense system, designed to deploy Atmaca and Cakir missiles for strategic missions. Torpedoes like the Akya and Orka, developed entirely through domestic expertise, enhance underwater operations with high-speed precision.
In air defense, the Siper long-range system provides critical protection for military bases and ports, while the Hisar missiles shield facilities against aircraft and UAV threats. Close-range solutions such as the Sungur and Levent systems are optimized for mobile and stationary air defense operations.
Technological integration
Roketsan’s innovations extend to multi-role platforms like the CNRA multiple-launch rocket system and the KMC-U tactical missile system, which emphasize flexibility and rapid deployment. Additionally, the company’s Midlas vertical launcher system enables sequential firing of guided munitions, offering tactical versatility.
By leveraging indigenous expertise, Roketsan’s cutting-edge systems position Türkiye as a significant player in the global defense sector, reinforcing its security and strategic autonomy.
