Türkiye’s main opposition leader demands action on Syrian refugees

Ozgur Ozel, the leader of Türkiye’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), has called on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to engage in discussions with Syrian regime leader Bashar al-Assad to normalize relations with Syria.

Speaking at an event, CHP leader Ozel made significant remarks regarding Türkiye’s relationship with Syria. Meanwhile, in his appeal to President Erdogan, Ozel stressed the urgent need to resolve the issue of Syrian refugees, stating, “Let’s take action; whether we go separately or together, we must address this situation.”

He pointed out that Türkiye is the world’s largest host of refugees, saying, “We are far ahead of any other country. Even if you combine all the others, they still fall short of our numbers. We must find a collective solution to this problem. If we fail to do so, it won’t benefit either Türkiye or Europe. This moment presents a great opportunity.”

‘Let’s seek support from Europe’

Ozel reminded attendees of the general amnesty in Syria, saying, “Given the current general amnesty, I am in talks with leaders from social democratic, socialist, and leftist parties worldwide.”

“They agree that returning refugees to Syria is feasible financially, but they emphasize, ‘Please do not send them to us.’ Let’s secure funding from around the world and seek support from Europe,” he added.

‘Our own citizens are struggling’

He also advocated for supporting Syrian refugees in returning to their homeland, arguing, “Our own citizens are struggling; many of our children are unemployed and cannot find work. We cannot let this opportunity slip away.”

“Go to Assad, negotiate, and make an agreement. While the amnesty is in effect, let’s send these individuals back with celebration and support,” he emphasized.
