Türkiye’s lunar mission gains international attention through Swedish collaboration

Türkiye’s ambitious lunar mission is drawing international interest as the country advances its space exploration efforts.
The Swedish Institute of Space Physics has partnered with Türkiye’s TUBITAK UZAY to conduct scientific research on the moon, collecting data that could contribute to global space studies.
Sweden-Türkiye collaboration on lunar research
The Swedish Institute of Space Physics has been working with TUBITAK UZAY since July 2022 as part of Türkiye’s first moon mission.
Professor Stas Barabash, the institute’s Vice President and Director of Solar System and Space Technology Programs, emphasized the significance of this partnership.
“We have developed a collaboration with Türkiye within the scope of the lunar mission that will benefit both countries,” Barabash said.
“Together, we will collect unique data on the moon’s surface and conduct various scientific studies.”
Barabash highlighted that the joint research will use innovative techniques to examine how the lunar environment interacts with the moon’s surface.
“This study aims to answer key questions regarding the formation of water on the Moon’s surface and the effects of local magnetic fields on plasma in the lunar atmosphere,” he added.

Lunar research opportunities for Turkish students
Türkiye’s growing investment in space exploration is also fostering interest among young scientists and researchers. Barabash noted that the recent Third Lunar Science Working Group meeting in Ankara demonstrated Türkiye’s rapid progress in space science.
“It was exciting to witness the expansion of Türkiye’s space exploration community and to observe the country’s potential in this field,” he said.
“The enthusiasm and professionalism of the team led by TUBITAK UZAY have made this collaboration both productive and inspiring.”
To further support Türkiye’s lunar mission, Barabash announced that Swedish institutions are inviting Turkish students interested in space science to pursue doctoral studies in Sweden. “We are eager to work with Turkish students who want to contribute to the lunar project,” he said.

Türkiye’s space strategy gains momentum
Following its first human space mission, Türkiye has accelerated its efforts to establish a strong presence in the global space sector.
The country’s lunar exploration goals, coupled with international collaborations like the one with Sweden, are positioning Türkiye as an emerging player in space research.
As preparations continue for Türkiye’s upcoming Moon mission, experts believe these joint projects will strengthen scientific cooperation and pave the way for future advancements in space exploration.
