Türkiye’s climate could become more like Egypt’s, researcher warns

Rising temperatures in Türkiye due to climate change pose a risk of the country resembling Egypt’s hot climate and endangering its ecosystems

While the effects of global warming become more evident each year, Türkiye may soon have the same climate characteristics as Egypt. Experts say that the subtropical zone is gradually expanding toward the north due to climate change and point out that ecosystems in Anatolia are in danger of deterioration.

Tekirdag Namik Kemal University Geography Department Lecturer Dr. Ilker Eroglu said Türkiye may soon have the same climate characteristics as Egypt.

Eroglu stated that climate change negatively affects all living things in the world.

Underlining that global warming will affect the whole world and that this issue should be taken seriously by everyone, Eroglu emphasized that the subtropical zone is gradually expanding toward the north due to climate change.

 Eroglu suggests that due to global warming, Türkiye’s climate could resemble Egypt’s in the near future. He highlights the rising sea temperatures as evidence, attributing the northward migration of fish species like anchovies to this phenomenon. This migration disrupts the existing ecosystem and reduces biodiversity. Eroglu emphasizes the urgency of addressing climate change to mitigate its detrimental effects.

The researcher pointed out that global warming has affected 12,000 plants in Türkiye, 3,000 of which are endemic.

Stating that efforts to reduce the effects of climate change should be increased further, Eroglu said: “Climate change, especially increasing temperatures, decreasing precipitation, and drought, cause ecosystems to deteriorate and agricultural productivity to decrease. It is important that we take the necessary precautions and develop policies to mitigate the effects of global warming. It is essential to determine the impact on temperature and precipitation. Knowing the current situation is the first step.

Recognizing the potential for changing rainfall patterns and rising temperatures, prioritizing plant species that can thrive in this altered climate is crucial. This necessitates a shift toward drought-resistant crops with lower water requirements. Furthermore, implementing stricter water conservation measures is essential. Türkiye, already facing water scarcity, stands to be severely impacted by any further depletion of water resources. Therefore, emphasizing the judicious use of water is imperative.”
