Türkiye’s Defense Minister Yasar Guler highlighted the intensity and scope of current military operations during an interview on Turkish news channel Haberturk.

He stated that the Ministry of National Defense and the Turkish Armed Forces are executing the most comprehensive and effective operations since the War of Independence. Guler emphasized the unwavering commitment to eliminate the PKK terrorist group, stating, “No matter who supports them, we will consign the PKK to history.”

Ongoing counterterrorism efforts in Türkiye

Guler provided details on the expansion of commando brigades, now numbering over 20, significantly enhancing operational capability. These units have been engaging in sustained operations, particularly over the past eight years, leading to a state where the PKK is described as “completely powerless.” He stressed the importance of continuous presence and pressure, with Turkish forces not retreating, but instead, forcing the PKK to abandon their positions.

Joint operations with Iraq

Discussing operations in northern Iraq, including the ongoing Pence-Kilit operation, Guler underscored Türkiye’s determination to “lock the key” on terror. He revealed that Türkiye and Iraq are planning to establish a joint operations center against the PKK, with Iraqi officials set to visit Ankara for discussions. He noted Iraq’s recent ban on three PKK-affiliated parties and the confiscation of their assets as positive developments.

Türkiye, Syria peace talks

Regarding peace efforts with Syria, Guler mentioned President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s endeavors to foster regional stability. However, he noted that conditions need to be met for negotiations with the Syrian regime, including a clear withdrawal date and the acceptance of an inclusive constitution. Guler also highlighted Türkiye’s success in securing its southern border through operations like Euphrates Shield and Peace Spring.

Türkiye’s Steel Dome

Guler discussed Türkiye’s advancements in defense technology, including the ongoing development of the “Steel Dome” project, which aims to provide comprehensive protection through integrated defense systems.

Eurofighter talks with US

On defense procurement, Guler provided updates on Türkiye’s negotiations with the U.S. for F-16s and with Eurofighter partner nations. He expressed optimism about the positive progress with Eurofighter, noting support from three partner countries and potential favorable developments in Germany.

What happened: Türkiye’s Eurofighter procurement interest was first publicly discussed by President Erdogan during a visit to Berlin in 2023. Guler reiterated Türkiye’s intent to acquire these fighter jets, highlighting the ongoing negotiations and the need to secure Germany’s approval.

Regional security concerns against YPG

Guler addressed regional security concerns, including the U.S.’ provision of air defense systems to the YPG in Syria, which Ankara views as an extension of the PKK. He criticized the U.S. for undermining Türkiye’s efforts to combat terror and stressed the risks associated with these actions.

‘Genocide’ in Gaza

Commenting on Israel’s actions in Gaza, Guler condemned the violence, calling it a “genocide” with catastrophic humanitarian consequences. He assured that Ankara is prepared to evacuate its citizens and allies from Lebanon if necessary.
