Türkiye welcomes Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border agreement

Türkiye on Thursday welcomed the border demarcation agreement signed between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, praising the resolution of a long-standing territorial dispute.
In a written statement, Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said: “This agreement, concluded as a result of the close dialogue between the two countries at the highest level, will contribute to peace, stability, and cooperation in the region.”
Earlier in the day, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon signed the landmark agreement in Bishkek, resolving tensions along the nearly 1,000-kilometer (621-mile) shared border.

The border had been a recurrent source of conflict, with major clashes occurring in 2021 and 2022.
The most severe clashes in 2021 resulted in the deaths of 36 Kyrgyz and 19 Tajik citizens over three days of fighting. In September 2022, two days of violence left at least 100 people dead and displaced approximately 140,000 people.
