Türkiye urges immediate support for Gaza and Lebanon at D-8 Summit
Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Wednesday called for urgent support for Gaza and Lebanon at the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation summit, Turkish diplomatic sources reported.
Speaking at the summit in the Egyptian capital, Fidan highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel’s actions have resulted in thousands of deaths and significant economic damage, estimated at billions of dollars.
Fidan emphasized that Gaza and Lebanon are in urgent need of assistance and reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to supporting its “brothers” by offering resources and expertise.
D-8 yet to realize it capabilities
He also underscored the importance of regional ownership in fostering stability and peace in the Middle East, urging D-8 members to unite against Israel’s aggression, particularly nations like Egypt and Iran. Despite its immense potential, Fidan noted that the D-8 has yet to fully realize its capabilities.
The minister further emphasized the vital role of young people in strengthening the organization and encouraged more effective cooperation among member states.
Fidan also pointed to the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises in the development of countries and stressed the need to embrace technology to foster innovation.
Reaffirming Türkiye’s support for Azerbaijan’s membership in the D-8, Fidan expressed confidence that Azerbaijan’s accession would be approved at the next summit.
The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, known as Developing-8, promotes development cooperation among Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Türkiye.
