Türkiye to intervene in Israel genocide case, says Erdogan

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Türkiye will intervene in the genocide case against Israel during a Cabinet meeting held in Ankara. The meeting, lasting over three hours, covered key topics such as escalating tensions in the Middle East and Türkiye’s economic situation.

Erdogan criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza, noting that the crisis escalated with the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh. He condemned the Israeli government’s actions and the Western actors, including the United States, for their support of Israel. “Netanyahu’s government’s lawless, aggressive stance puts our region at risk of bad scenarios,” Erdogan said.

Türkiye has pledged solidarity with the Palestinian people, and Erdogan highlighted the country’s historical role as a haven for the oppressed. He confirmed that Türkiye’s legal team would submit an intervention petition to the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Aug 7. “No matter what the genocide network blinded by blood does, they cannot prevent Türkiye and the Turkish nation’s solidarity with the Palestinian people,” he said.

Economic Developments

The Cabinet also discussed Türkiye’s economic trajectory, with Erdogan emphasizing continued support for the business community. “We will continue to support our business world,” he stated. Erdogan highlighted the Directorate General of Foundations’ efforts, mentioning the restoration or repair of approximately 6,000 cultural assets over the past 22 years, including the recent restoration of Yıldız Palace.

Erdogan announced the HİT 30 program, which will direct $30 billion in tax incentives and grants towards high-tech investments. “We see that the HİT 30 program has created a different excitement in the sector,” he noted.

The President also shared positive economic indicators, including a historic high in July exports, which increased by 13.8% compared to the previous year, reaching $22.5 billion. Tourism has also seen a significant boost, with 26.1 million visitors in the first half of 2024, marking a 14% increase from the previous year.

Inflation and Opposition Criticism

Addressing inflation, Erdogan expressed optimism, stating that the downward trend that began in June has continued into July, with annual inflation decreasing by 13.7 points. “Our goal is to reduce inflation and ensure lasting prosperity,” he said.

Erdogan also took the opportunity to criticize the opposition for failing to meet their promises, urging citizens to disregard their pessimistic statements. “I expect our citizens to continue trusting our government, which has a history of 22 years filled with success,” he added.

Historic Prisoner Exchange

In addition to domestic economic measures, Erdogan highlighted a significant diplomatic achievement. He praised the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) for facilitating the largest prisoner exchange since World War II, involving 26 individuals from the United States, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, Russia, and Belarus. “This operation, which underscores Türkiye’s crucial role, was conducted flawlessly,” Erdogan remarked.
