Turkish defense company Aselsan has successfully completed live-fire testing for its GOKTAN project, which enables the air-launched TOLUN munition to be fired from ground platforms.

The company announced the milestone in a social media post on X on Feb. 18, marking a significant advancement in Türkiye’s defense capabilities.

Secretariat of Defense Industry Secretary Haluk Gorgun, evaluating the successful completion of the firing test in Aselsan’s GOKTAN Project, said: “TOLUN reached its target with full accuracy by opening its fins after separating from the rocket.”

“TOLUN, which was launched with the DeltaV rocket, opened its fins after separating from the rocket and reached its target with full accuracy. The TOLUN ammunition, which has been launched from air platforms and has proven its success many times so far, has also gained the ability to strike on land.”

“We are confident that GOKTAN will make a significant difference in the field. We congratulate all our engineers. We will continue to run from success to success with the unity of power of our defense industry.”

Transforming TOLUN into a ground-launched weapon

GOKTAN integrates a rocket motor into the TOLUN munition, enhancing its command, control, and firing capabilities for ground-based operations. During the latest test, the system successfully launched the munition, which then deployed its wings and hit the designated target with precision.

Aselsan led the development of the GOKTAN system in collaboration with DELTA-V, a key player in rocket propulsion technology.

The system allows for waypoint navigation, centralized and independent operation, and 360-degree engagement without requiring platform maneuvering. Additionally, it features inclined launch capability, multi-target engagement, and sequential firing options.

TOLUN is a GPS/INS-guided munition carried on a Smart Pneumatic Quad Rack (SADAK-4T). TOLUN can be engaged against soft and hardened multiple targets simultaneously.

The warhead of TOLUN is designed by TUBITAK SAGE, and the rest of the system is designed by Aselsan.

  • Range: 55 NM
  • Maximum Altitude: 40.000 ft (MSL)
  • Accuracy: CEP less than 10 meter
  • Guidance: GPS / INS
  • Penetration: 1 meter of reinforced concrete from 30 NM range

Competing with international systems

The ground-launched version of TOLUN is considered comparable to the GLSDB (Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb) developed jointly by the U.S. and Sweden.

While GLSDB integrates the GBU-39 miniature bomb with an M26 rocket motor, GOKTAN employs a hybrid rocket motor, which is expected to significantly extend its range because of enhanced thrust control.

Future upgrades may include the integration of the TOLUN IIR (Imaging Infrared) variant, which could further evolve GOKTAN into a cost-effective hybrid cruise missile, providing additional operational flexibility to the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF).

TOLUN munition: High precision and versatility

TOLUN is a precision-guided munition in the 100+ kg class, designed for extended-range, high-accuracy strikes. Its aerodynamic design and folding wings enable it to engage targets at long distances.

Featuring a high-explosive warhead, it is capable of neutralizing a variety of targets, making it a versatile asset for modern combat scenarios.

New competitor to the existing defense market

The GOKTAN system positions Aselsan as a direct competitor to existing Western solutions.

The U.S.-developed GBU-39B Small Diameter Bomb Weapon System (SDB) and Sweden’s Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) are considered global benchmarks for such systems.

By introducing GOKTAN, Aselsan provides an alternative that is cost-effective and adaptable for various military applications.
