Türkiye satisfied with Syria’s normalization process
Türkiye’s Defense Minister Yasar Guler Saturday has made critical remarks about the country’s normalization process with Syria and its relations with Iraq, expressing satisfaction with the process.
The minister emphasized that cooperation with Iraq in the fight against terrorism will continue. He also noted that the situation regarding the downed Turkish drone in Iraq is under investigation.
Regarding the Syria normalization process, Guler maintained: “I consider Assad’s recent statements to be quite positive. President Erdogan had mentioned that meetings with Assad could be possible, and we are genuinely pleased that Assad seems to have understood and perceived this.”
“I don’t think there is an insurmountable problem between us. Once we resolve our issues, we can continue our normal activities as neighboring countries. It would benefit both nations if such a conflict environment ends as soon as possible and both countries return to their normal operations,” he added.
Türkiye-Iraq relations
Guler also touched upon Türkiye-Iraq relations, noting: “Iraq has shut down three PKK/YPG branches, including the most dangerous one, Tevgera Azadi, seized and banned all their assets. The Iraqi government has taken a strong stance.”
Calling for an end to the terrorist organization PKK/YPG’s violence, the minister said: “They understand well that there is no place for the PKK in Iraq and that it is time to put an end to the suffering caused by the organization to Iraq’s citizens.”
Counterterrorism cooperation
He emphasized the ongoing cooperation between Türkiye and Iraq in the fight against terrorism, stating: “In line with the legitimate defense principle of Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, the Turkish Armed Forces will continue its counter-terrorism efforts with determination until no terrorist remains.”
The resolve for counterterrorism between Türkiye and Iraq is strengthening with the signed memorandum, and our commitment to enhancing cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow.
