Expert warns of major earthquake in eastern Türkiye after minor tremor
The recent 4.1 magnitude earthquake in Pulumur, Tunceli, has raised new alarms. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake occurred on a shallow fault line, potentially triggering significant fault zones in the area. Renowned geologist professor Naci Gorur has issued a warning about the potential for a larger quake, intensifying concerns.
On the morning of Sept. 16, Tunceli’s Pulumur district was struck by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake. AFAD reported that the earthquake occurred near the surface in the Pulumur/Bogazakaraderbent region. However, this minor tremor might not be just a routine occurrence.
Gorur took to social media to express his concerns, suggesting that the Pulumur earthquake might have affected the stress area of the 7 Su Fault. Gorur noted, “We are concerned because we expect a major earthquake in this region,” highlighting the potential for a larger seismic event.
‘Minor tremor may trigger major threat’
In his post, Gorur stated, “A shallow 4.1 earthquake occurred in Tunceli, Pulumur/Bogazakaraderbent area. The quake likely happened along a fault parallel to the 7 Su Fault zone.” This suggests that the earthquake may have impacted the stress area of the fault line.
Local population alarmed: Pulumur earthquake
Gorur’s warning has heightened concerns among residents, while scientists closely monitor the potential effects of the Pulumur earthquake.
Türkiye, known for its active fault lines, particularly in the eastern regions, has experienced devastating quakes in the past. Experts emphasize the need to closely monitor the activity on the 7 Su Fault.
