The Vatican leader underscores the critical importance of beginning negotiations promptly to prevent further deterioration

Türkiye has presented a proposition to initiate peace discussions between Russia and Ukraine, as disclosed by Pope Francis.

He underscored the critical importance of beginning negotiations promptly to prevent further deterioration.

“I am of the opinion that those who carefully evaluate the circumstances, prioritize the well-being of their populace, and demonstrate the courage to extend an olive branch and engage in dialogue exhibit true strength,” he conveyed to Swiss media.

“In the current context, facilitated by the backing of international powers, the prospect of dialogue is within reach. Negotiation is an act of valor. When confronted with adversity and recognizing the unsustainable trajectory, one must muster the courage to come to the negotiating table. Procrastination only serves to prolong the conflict, resulting in an escalation of casualties,” he added.

“We must actively seek out a mediating nation. There is no shortage of countries willing to act as mediators in the Ukrainian conflict. For instance, Türkiye has taken the initiative to propose kickstarting this process. Let us not delay the commencement of negotiations as the situation continues to deteriorate,” Pope maintained.

Francis, who maintains daily communication with the Catholic community in Gaza amid the ongoing Israeli assaults, highlighted their narratives of the ravages of war.
