Türkiye’s government prioritized action on the stray dog issue, calling for improved shelter conditions during a recent meeting.

Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli presented the latest data on stray animals, while Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Parliamentary Group Chairman Abdullah Guler outlined the progress made in addressing the issue.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged a cautious approach to the topic of euthanasia. Guler noted that the 5199 Animal Protection Law already includes provisions for euthanasia but suggested that its scope could be expanded for public safety.

President Erdogan also emphasized the urgency of resolving the issue, stating: “Conclude this matter as soon as possible. Finish the working draft and present it to me promptly.”

The discussion also touched on the role of local governments and the need to improve the quality and conditions of shelters.

It was acknowledged that merely placing stray dogs in shelters would not suffice and that enhancing the facilities and conditions within the shelters was crucial.

The proposal is expected to be submitted to the Speaker of the Parliament before the legislative session ends.
