Türkiye opens 2nd foreign mission in Damascus, strengthening humanitarian efforts in Syria
The Turkish Red Crescent (Turk Kizilay) inaugurated its Damascus Delegation at the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) headquarters in the Syrian capital. This marks Türkiye’s second foreign mission in the country, aimed at enhancing coordination and support for humanitarian initiatives in Syria’s recovery.
The ceremony was attended by Turk Kizilay President Fatma Meric Yilmaz, SARC President Hazem Bakla and other officials. The event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the signing of a cooperation protocol, and the distribution of aid packages to local residents.
Yilmaz presented Bakla with a commemorative plaque and expressed her enthusiasm for his leadership role at SARC, highlighting their previous collaboration in humanitarian efforts in Idlib. Following the opening, Yilmaz and Bakla visited the Barze district of Damascus to deliver aid to identified beneficiaries.
“This delegation office is pivotal for assessing needs and coordinating services in the region,” Yilmaz said. “By working together, both Red Crescents can amplify their impact in alleviating suffering and accelerating recovery.”
Focus on Idlib: Aid for vulnerable communities
During her visit, Yilmaz also toured Idlib, where Turk Kizilay has been active in supporting displaced populations. On Dec. 22, the organization delivered 200 food packages and clothing for children in the Al-Shami camp and orphanages. Through initiatives like “Compassion Stores,” where individuals in need can select clothing free of charge, 120 children received essential winter clothing.
Turk Kizilay continues to operate briquette homes and provide medical support through established health facilities in Idlib, addressing the ongoing challenges of conflict and displacement.
“Through coordinated efforts with SARC and local authorities, we are committed to rebuilding lives and ensuring dignity for Syrians,” Yilmaz affirmed during the visit.
Background: Turk Kizilay’s ongoing commitment to Syria
Since the onset of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Turk Kizilay has provided life-saving assistance to displaced Syrians both within Syria and in Türkiye. Over the years, the organization has expanded its reach, addressing critical needs through food distribution, shelter provision, and healthcare services.
In areas like Idlib, Afrin, and northern Aleppo, Turk Kizilay has established 29 hospitals and health centers, seven charity stores, and shelters for over 27,000 people. Clean water initiatives include constructing nine water towers and wells. Its aid, valued at $1.28 billion, has delivered tents, blankets, hygiene kits, and educational materials to millions. Notably, this effort has been bolstered by significant contributions from international humanitarian aid funds.
In collaboration with SARC, Turk Kizilay has reached over 89,000 individuals in locations such as Tel Rifaat, Aleppo, and Damascus, distributing food, water, and hygiene products.
Support for Syrians in Türkiye, return efforts
Türkiye has been a sanctuary for millions of Syrians, providing shelter, education, and social services. Programs like the Kizilaykart-Social Cohesion Assistance Program (SUY) have delivered cash assistance to vulnerable populations, supported by the European Union.
As the return process of displaced Syrians gains momentum, Turk Kizilay ensures continuous support at border crossings. Since Dec.10, warm meals and refreshments have been distributed to returning families, easing their journey back to their homeland.
