Türkiye has launched the first of its new New Type Landing Ships (YLCT) at Anadolu Shipyard. The project, initiated in early 2024, is led by the Presidency of Defense Industries and aims to deliver eight advanced amphibious vessels to the Turkish Navy.

The contract was signed in April 2024, and just 10 months later, the first ship, YLCT C-159, was launched.

Türkiye has increased the domestic production rate of its naval platforms from 20% to 80% over the past 23 years.

The country is now among a small group of nations capable of designing, building, and maintaining a full range of military ships, including amphibious assault ships, support vessels, combat ships, and submarines.

The YLCT class ships will enhance Türkiye’s ability to transport tanks, troops, and supplies during operations, boosting both military logistics and humanitarian missions.

Türkiye’s growing naval ambitions

Türkiye successfully exported warships to Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Qatar.

In late 2024, it signed a landmark deal with Portugal, marking Türkiye’s first-ever military ship sale to a NATO and EU member.

Turkish shipyards have produced some of the largest amphibious ships (LST) in NATO, including multi-purpose vessels used in disaster relief efforts.

The YLCT-class ships are designed to operate at high speeds, playing a key role in future naval operations, including disaster response, military deployments, and coastal security.

What’s next?

The first YLCT ship will enter active duty later this year after completing final acceptance tests.

The remaining seven ships will be delivered within 27 months, further expanding Türkiye’s amphibious warfare capabilities.

The project is part of a broader national effort to develop a domestically produced aircraft carrier and next-generation submarines, solidifying Türkiye’s position as a rising naval power.
