Türkiye, Japan celebrate 100 years of diplomatic relations
Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Foreign Affairs Committee, Fuat Oktay, met with the Chairman of the Japanese House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Katsumata Takaaki, and his accompanying delegation.
Oktay emphasized the importance of the meeting in light of the sensitive developments and numerous structural transformations occurring globally.
Historical ties, strategic partnership
Highlighting the long-standing friendship between Türkiye and Japan, Oktay recalled that the relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership in 2013.
He noted that 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, making the delegation’s visit particularly significant.
Oktay mentioned that various events and high-level reciprocal visits are being organized in both Türkiye and Japan to celebrate the centennial of their diplomatic relations.
He expressed anticipation for the visits of Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and the Crown Prince to Türkiye in 2024.
Naval visits enhancing relations
The visit of the Turkish naval vessel TCG Kinaliada to Japan in June was highlighted as a significant contribution to strengthening bilateral ties. Oktay also mentioned the upcoming visit of a Japanese training fleet to Türkiye in August as another important event that will further enhance relations.
Oktay underscored the critical role of parliamentary diplomacy in developing bilateral relations. He advocated for strengthening parliamentary dialogue and noted that reciprocal visits at the level of parliamentary speakers, specialized committees, and friendship groups would further bolster relations.
Security concerns
In discussing regional issues, Oktay touched on the Russia-Ukraine war and the situation in Gaza.
He also raised concerns about the activities of the PKK and its affiliates in Japan, stressing the importance of ensuring these activities do not harm bilateral relations. Commercial relations were also identified as a key topic for discussion.
Katsumata Takaaki’s remarks
Katsumata Takaaki echoed Oktay’s sentiments, recognizing the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Japan. He expressed his pleasure in visiting Türkiye during such a significant period and mentioned the planned events and high-level visits marking the centennial.
Invitation to President Erdogan
Katsumata Takaaki announced that the Japanese government is inviting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to visit Japan within the year, expressing optimism about the positive impact such a visit would have on bilateral relations.
He also invited Oktay to visit Japan, highlighting the importance of inter-parliamentary contacts in strengthening the friendship between the two nations.
