Türkiye announced on Thursday that it will introduce visa-free entry for Iraqi citizens under the age of 15 and over the age of 50, beginning on September 1. The decision was finalized during the fourth meeting of the Türkiye-Iraq High-Level Security Mechanism, held in Ankara.

This move comes as a result of ongoing negotiations between Türkiye and Iraq, solidified during President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Baghdad earlier this year. The visa exemption aims to strengthen ties between the two neighboring countries, facilitating easier travel for certain Iraqi citizens.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed the development during a joint press conference with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, held after the security talks. “We have decided to implement visa exemptions for Iraqis aged below 15 and above 50, starting from September 1,” Fidan said, framing the decision as a step toward fostering closer relations.

The decision is expected to bolster cross-border interactions, with Türkiye anticipating an increase in travel from Iraq, particularly for family visits and business-related activities
