Türkiye extends UNIFIL mandate in Lebanon, proposal heads to Parliament
The mandate for Türkiye’s troops deployed in Lebanon as part of the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL) is set to be extended for another year.
The proposal, signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will be submitted to the Turkish Parliament next week. The current mandate, which expires on October 31, 2024, is expected to be extended until October 31, 2025.
Türkiye has participated in UNIFIL since 2006, following a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at restoring peace after the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. Türkiye’s contributions to the mission include a frigate for the UNIFIL Naval Task Force and around 90 personnel, including five observers.
The Turkish Parliament first authorized Türkiye’s involvement in UNIFIL on September 5, 2006, and has extended the mandate annually since then. The proposed extension will be debated in the general assembly of the Turkish Parliament.
UNIFIL, established to maintain peace and stability in southern Lebanon, currently comprises around 10,000 troops from 46 countries. Türkiye’s involvement is part of broader international efforts to support regional peacekeeping.
