The 81st iteration of the Türkiye-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) was held in Strasbourg, France on Wednesday.

The meeting brought together key figures from both sides to discuss a wide range of issues.

Key participants and topics of discussion

On the Turkish side, the delegation was led by Istanbul Member of Parliament and JPC Co-Chair Ismail Emrah Karayel.

The European Parliament is represented by Emmanouil Kefaloggiannis, the chair of the EU-Türkiye JPC Delegation. The meeting also includes Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the EU, Ambassador Faruk Kaymakci.

The focus of the session is primarily on Türkiye’s EU accession negotiations, the current status of bilateral relations, and the political and economic dimensions of cooperation between Türkiye and the EU.

These discussions are seen as essential for assessing the progress of Türkiye’s integration into EU frameworks, particularly in light of ongoing challenges in the accession process.

Purpose of Joint Parliamentary Committee

The Türkiye-EU JPC was established as a mechanism for facilitating cooperation and dialogue between the European and Turkish Parliament.

It aims to promote political dialogue, ease communication between both parliaments and support the development of Türkiye-EU relations, particularly under the Ankara Agreement.

The JPC is made up of an equal number of representatives from the European and Turkish Parliament, creating a balanced platform for discussions on issues affecting both parties.

Previous and future meetings

The most recent meeting of the JPC was held in Ankara on Dec. 19-20, 2023. This session in Strasbourg marks another important step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the relationship between Türkiye and the EU.
