Türkiye deems France’s decision on Assyrian, Chaldean communities during the Ottoman Empire era ‘null and void’
Türkiye strongly denounces French resolution as “null and void,” rejecting its unfounded accusations regarding historical events concerning Assyrian and Chaldean communities during the Ottoman Empire
On Monday, Türkiye firmly rejected a resolution passed by French lawmakers, deeming it “null and void” due to its baseless accusations concerning the Assyrian and Chaldean communities during the Ottoman Empire era.
According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, the resolution adopted by the French parliament’s lower house, the National Assembly, is seen as a deliberate distortion of historical events for political gain.
The ministry emphasized that the resolution lacks both legal and historical grounds, pointing out that the French government had previously refrained from supporting a similar resolution passed by the French Senate last year.
Highlighting the recurrence of unsubstantiated accusations, particularly by members of the ruling party, the ministry condemned the politicization of historical events.
Furthermore, it stressed that parliamentary bodies lack the authority to interpret or pass judgments on historical matters.
The ministry also underscored that the resolution contradicts the principles of the 1948 U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which specifies that only competent courts can rule on allegations of genocide.
