Türkiye criticizes Israel’s actions in Syria, reaffirms support for Syrian people
Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accused Israel of undermining Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stating its actions threaten the region’s stability.
Speaking Tuesday during budget hearings for 2025 at the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Fidan condemned Israel’s policies and reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people.
“Israel jeopardizes the process by which the Syrian people are approaching peace and tranquility. Israel, which destroyed Gaza, now threatens the future of our Syrian brothers and sisters,” Fidan said in his address.
Türkiye has consistently stood by the Syrian people, Fidan emphasized, even as international attention has shifted away from the war-torn country. “We expect a new Syria where peace and tranquility prevail, where different religious and ethnic groups live side by side in peace,” he stated, adding that Ankara seeks a Syria that ensures regional stability and resists becoming a haven for terrorism.
Fidan also addressed the need to combat terrorist groups such as Daesh and the PKK, pledging decisive action to prevent them from exploiting Syria’s current instability. “We will do whatever it takes to prevent Daesh and the PKK from taking advantage of the current situation,” he said.
On the political front, Fidan highlighted the importance of uniting the Syrian opposition to create an inclusive government capable of rebuilding the country. “It is time to unite and rebuild the country,” he said, expressing hope for the return of displaced Syrians to their homeland.
Reaffirming Türkiye’s dedication to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Fidan pledged continued collaboration with regional and international actors to achieve these goals.
Fidan also turned his attention to regional issues, warning that arming the Greek Cypriot Administration could escalate tensions on the island. He cautioned against triggering a new arms race in Cyprus, urging stakeholders to approach the matter responsibly.
