Türkiye remains determined to secure reimbursements for the F-35 fighter jets while actively pursuing the acquisition of Eurofighter Typhoon jets, defense ministry says

An official from the National Defense Ministry reaffirmed the country’s efforts to secure reimbursements for the F-35 fighter jets while simultaneously working with allies to potentially acquire Eurofighter Typhoons.

The focus remains steadfast on the development of the indigenous 5th generation fighter aircraft, KAAN.

Speaking at a press briefing, National Defense Ministry’s Public Relations Advisor Admiral Zeki Akturk highlighted the ongoing negotiations with the United States concerning the F-35 fighter jets. He noted that while both countries’ positions remain unchanged, Türkiye hopes to recoup the funds it initially invested in the F-35 program.

“At this stage, we need to concentrate on KAAN,” Akturk emphasized.

Addressing the status of Türkiye’s request for Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from the United Kingdom, Akturk mentioned that efforts to secure the Eurofighters are under way. He mentioned ongoing discussions between U.K. and German officials on this matter.

“We expect our allies to make decisions in line with the spirit of the alliance and common security perspective. We are confident that positive outcomes will be achieved,” he added.

U.S. Ambassador to Ankara Jeff Flake also commented on the situation, stating, “If Türkiye wants to buy F-35s, this is good for the alliance, Türkiye, and the U.S. We can find a way to resolve the S-400 issue.” He noted that during a discussion about a potential F-35 option in Türkiye, U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland seemed surprisingly optimistic.

Türkiye continues to express interest in acquiring Eurofighter Typhoon jets, despite the recent sale of F-16 warplanes by the United States to Ankara.
