Türkiye has successfully conducted the third test launch of its indigenously developed Tayfun ballistic missile, marking a significant milestone in the country’s long-range strike capabilities.

The test was carried out at Rize-Artvin Airport, with strict security measures in place throughout the launch.

Developed by Roketsan under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), Tayfun is Türkiye’s first short-range ballistic missile (SRBM), advancing the nation’s missile technology beyond tactical ballistic missile (TBM) systems.

Successful test, but range details remain classified

The test launch, conducted in the early hours of the day, followed a predefined mission scenario and was reportedly completed successfully. However, the specific distance covered by the missile was not disclosed due to security concerns.

Tayfun is believed to be one of Türkiye’s longest-range ballistic missiles so far, though official range specifications remain classified. Typically, ballistic missiles are categorized as follows:

  • TBM: Range of up to 300 kilometers
  • SRBM: Range between 300 and 1,000 kilometers

With its classification as an SRBM, Tayfun represents a major leap in Türkiye’s missile program, elevating the country’s military capabilities to a new strategic level.

Tayfun enters serial production

Following previous successful tests, Roketsan CEO Murat Ikinci recently confirmed that Tayfun has entered serial production, signaling its transition into active deployment within the Turkish military.

“Heavy storm warning in the Black Sea!” Ikinci wrote on X, following the test launch of the Tayfun ballistic missile.

Türkiye’s advancing missile program: Tayfun and beyond

The Turkish Armed Forces have possessed tactical ballistic missile capabilities since the 1990s, but Tayfun marks the first entry into the SRBM category.

Following Tayfun’s success, Roketsan is reportedly working on the next-generation “Cenk” missile, which is expected to extend Türkiye’s strike range even further.
