Türkiye condemns UEFA over Demiral’s ‘wolf salute’ investigation
Reactions to UEFA’s investigation against Türkiye’s national football team player Merih Demiral over the “wolf salute” sign continue, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wednesday.
In the round of 16 match, Türkiye defeated Austria 2-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024. Merih Demiral, who scored both goals, became the focal point of the match with his joy that included a “wolf salute.”
Earlier Wednesday, UEFA initiated an investigation into Merih Demiral’s use of the “wolf salute.”
‘This is xenophobia’
Foreign Ministry has criticized UEFA’s decision to initiate a disciplinary investigation against national football player Merih Demiral following the Euro 2024 match between Türkiye and Austria on July 2.
The ministry deemed UEFA’s action “unacceptable”, citing concerns over the perceived unfair treatment of Demiral.
Referring to a report by the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution from September 2023, the Ministry highlighted that the “wolf salute” gesture – a historical and cultural symbol – does not constitute grounds for classification as far-right in Germany, where it is not banned.
However, the reactions shown by the German authorities to Mr. Demiral are evaluated as containing xenophobia in themselves.

The ministry further condemned any political reactions targeting the expression of cultural symbols during moments of joy in sports, emphasizing that such actions are not directed at any individual.
